I get this question a lot. My initial answer is “if its not broke don’t fix it”. When your furnace reaches 15-20 years old, it could be time to consider swapping it out for a high – efficiency model. But just know they don’t make products to last like they used to. Your next furnace will likely not last as long as your current one.
It is smart to have your furnace serviced yearly and change out your filters as needed or every 3-4 months. If you have a trustworthy company you work with then make sure you are talking to them about the health of your system. Your current system will last longer if you are properly maintaining it.
Here are three signs that you might need a new furnace.
1. Repairs are starting to be more frequent and your bills are increasing without changing the settings.
2. There are hot and cold spots in rooms – however, in older homes this is very common and might not be a faulty furnace.
3. Your furnace is turning on / off more frequently.
My best advice is to get at least 2-3 quotes on a new furnace. The biggest most heavily advertised company is usually not the cheapest. Make sure you follow the yearly maintenance suggestions.
